The Natural History Museum of Sound was founded in the haunted house on Third Street in Louisville, Kentucky on a day in September of the year two thousand and one. Founding members were Tim Ruth, Zan Hoffman and Rinus van Alebeek (thatâs me writing this). In the weeks prior to the institution, the mansion had seen and heard many charming sounds. The result was that every single object be it animal, vegetal or mineral, was aurally possessed. A fifty minutes exhibition of the site-specific...

Zanoisect's collaboration with Basque artist Miguel "Xedh" A. Garcia was the 86th release by Zanoisect, finished in September 2005. This effort continues a process begun with Zanoisect 51 "Charvaka Enters Hastinapura" in December 2000 where a single artists' collaborative sound sources were the only sonic elements used in a release. In that case Jorge Castro [pr] provided the sound material. Since then there have been single artist collaborations with NXFXTXEX [dk], Haters...

Music labels are bombarded by demos, more than they possibly can ever listen to. Sometimes a few demos rise above the onslaught and demonstrate originality and hold your attention. But a small label can't release everything on a CD. So what does one do with the good music that one gets and can't afford to release? Tube Alloys is a project by Zan Hoffman (zh27.org) and Jeff Surak that combines, smelts, and delivers a new work derived from the best parts of some very good demos. Original material...

doministiku [doku24] zanstones . L0NE L0NE is the first in a series of reductionalist Zanstones releases. The zero replacing the O in the four letter titles designates this shift toward less. Established in 1983, Zanstones first release "The Subltle Art of Puddle Pushing" from 1984 established the continuing concerns with sound exploration. L0NE, created in the spring of 2009, is the 145th release by Zanstones which has been followed by H0NE, in late May. Zanstones is the...

"FF; Volume and Variety" is unquestionably my most celebrated release. For many years it was my most distributed tape. It captures my techniques and compositional verve at a real high. This tape uses sounds and voices by E. Oliva, Robert Ommundsen, Robert I Gillham, Barry Edgar Pilcher, Fendrums, Het Zweet, and Dog as Master. I wish I could objectively describe this tape, but I've heard it so much it's impossible.

The Elevation of Anxiety works are my collaborations with Minóy recorded by both of us (sometimes his mix - as in all of the m\z tapes; sometimes mine). These started in 1985 when I mixed together a couple Minóy tapes. The titles with lots of M's and Z's are part of this series which evolved as we sent tapes back and forth, adding more goodies to each other's mix. These also include Aquabatic Bubblegum, Dubzanmex and Zanminóysextra.

Audiobiographical Tidbits has some delightful experiments in songmaking. Bodycocktail istelf is not interested in trends or styles of music in the present day. We admit a nostalgia for the new wave synth pop era but cannot bring ourselves to make a polished or derivative effort without tongue firmly lodged in cheek. Tidbits has the hit "'L.S.D." which was actually finished before I noticed with silly satisfaction the hallucinagenic coincidence of the title. Bodycocktial doesn't make...

Jeff likes it when I just PLAY + here I am in my element. Scratchin', scrapin', squeekin', howlin' and gettin' down wif it. This is perhaps the 36th Zanstones (mid period) and a confident work that gives an occasional hint to the rarely divulged fact that I live in Kentucky. With material by Agog, Ditto, PBK, Runzlestirn & Gurglestock, John Wiggins.

A traditional Minóy combination starters to hear is Monochrome Melodrama with its use of voices, drones, short wave, and undulating synthesis. Another work in this style is Multiple Minóy which employs more wit in its construction and treatment than most tapes. These tapes, though odd, are considerably more soothing than many of the above-mentioned releases.

"Spd Kld Spd Rcr" and "Tuf Kld Spd Rcr" are even more nasty because the mix careens at breakneck speed and includes noises extraordinaire by Tuf. If you turn the volume up loudly enough it will sound like a jet plane taking off from your head. Not a good remedy for a hangover. In case you don't know, spd rcr is my homemade abbreviation for Speed Racer, the race car driver and hero of the Japanese cartoon I watched as a kid.

Zute Sute Betenyck is a project with the incredible Charlie Newman at the helm. He's a good friend, a great Grandbrother fan and a successful advertising executive from Louisville. This project has me reciting, singing and vocalizing wild lyrics he wrote a couple years before I was even born! These two works could be called concept pieces because they are projects he's masterminded. He plays Pro One, does mixing and uses old reel to reel rhythm tracks of his. CBC3 is also featured on Volume 1...

Deaf Mix For Jake Hobo is a much-loved work from the Elevation of Anxiety sub-label which housed collabortions between Minoy and myself. This work is a pointy-jivey trapsing through Minoy's twisted recording with a who's who of 1980's home taper cameos shuttled in as nescessary. Minoy is a home-taping whirlwind out of Torrance, Califorinia in the 1980's + our EoA collaborations are over 50 varied and challenging releases still available from ZH27.org. Those Creamy Porn Stars! Loops and loops with loops and more loops. Yes, just what ZH27 was lacking was a project based entirely on loop music. I'm feeling better already. Starting in October 1997 I spent quite a bit of time sampling and looping recordings from my vast home-taper collaborative tapes...and when I get them going, just so, you'll be pleased at the result. 21 Cranky Powerless Shalavas! from October 2002 was recorded in the back of Artswatch in Louisville, KY before a Sapat show...

The seventh tape "40 x 40" took longer than any other tape in my catalog to make. I commissioned everyone I was writing at the time to send me 40 second pieces to work with and I proceeded to make forty 40 second compositions figuring that the time restriction allowed for many small ideas to be presented that may not stand on their own for longer duration. The result is still what I consider brilliant after all these years. A true 'ZH27 Classic'.

The title of this series comes from "The Ruling Class" with Peter O'Toole. To me it supremely reflects the nature of the multi-contributor recordings I do. For two strong years, 1987-88, this series has had one prime compositional purpose: to create a dense and thick sonic concoction, with as many contributors as possible.

Featuring Thomas Eklund, this 700th ZH27 release continues some of the pioneering techniques used on ZH27 699 Museum of Frenzy by Zanoisect. This arrangement of acoustic sounds has a different feel from the recent Zanstones releases of this year. I had assembled a variety of soundings and voices but was not satsified with the mix, then I realized the sound sources I recieved from Sweden would be perfect to complete this work.
